A retired Massachusetts Superior Court judge insists he would not be surprised if former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez ends up walking away as a free man from the first-degree murder charges he now faces, according to FoxBoston.com.
Former Judge Isaac Borenstein, now a law professor at Suffolk and Northeastern universities, made his bold proclamation to the website on Wednesday, citing the dozens of murder cases he has presided over during his 22-year career as a point of reference.
"I would not be shocked if this verdict went a way that it didn't necessarily look like at this point," Borenstein told Fox. "It's the way the justice system works."
Hernandez, 23, is being held without bail and relegated to solitary confinement in the execution-style slaying of one-time associate Odin Lloyd. Fox previously reported the 27-year-old semi-pro football player's bullet-riddled body was found dumped less than a mile from Hernandez's North Attleborough mansion on the night of June 17.
The website reports police took Hernandez in custody just nine days later, but thus far have still been unable to locate the weapon used in the crime.
"As a prosecutor, I think they have a tough time sorting out exactly what was Aaron Hernandez's role, what is the role of the other people, and how are they going to come across as a witness," Borenstein told Fox.
