Dragons rugby winger Ashton Hewitt was not happy over a Twitter post that had targetted him. The 26-year-old Welsh player condemned the racial remark about him on social media, and he is hell-bent on knowing the user's identity.
In a screenshot on his Twitter, Ashton Hewitt was tagged by the anonymous user who mentioned that he was 'missing in action.'
Hewitt posted a tweet embedding the discriminating tweet and stating that, "This is what a Rugby fan somewhere (in Wales I think) wants me to see after a game."
Hewitt, an outspoken advocate of the Black Lives Matter movement, read the tweet on January 1 after the Dragons bowed to the Scarlets in the Guinness Pro 14, 20-3.
In an interview with Sky Sports News, Ashton Hewitt voiced out his frustration over the racial tweet. He said that he got used to it following the anti-racism protests that happened not just in his place but also other parts of the world.
"I've had quite a lot of abuse on social media and it's been quite hard to deal with but this is the first time I've had it really in relation to a performance and people, or a particular person, attacking me racially to do with rugby," Hewitt said.
Hewitt, who debuted with Dragons in 2013, continued that it was not his first time to meet racist trolls on social media. The incident might not be new to him, but it still got to his nerves, in all honesty. The impact of the tweet for those who suffered racial discrimination was not easy to ignore.
Furthermore, the former Cross Key FC player knew that it was difficult to understand why people resort to personal attacks, and it was exhausting on his part.
In light of the racial issue, Hewitt thanked the people who valued his support in the racial stand, and he said that those comments drove him to an inspiring battle that everyone wants to win.
On Saturday, the PRO 14 backed up Hewitt in a statement.
"Dragons Rugby is disgusted and appalled at an abhorrent racist post on social media yesterday evening targeting Ashton Hewitt," the organization wrote.
Moreover, the league condemns all kinds of discrimination and will not tolerate them at any level. Dragons rugby commended those who recognized Ashton Hewitt's response to the racial discrimination on Twitter. They will report those who support racism and other hate crimes.
Last month, Hewitt criticized the Argentina rugby union team for reconsidering Pablo Matera, following the captain's xenophobic posts on social media, which sparked social discrimination.
Matera was involved in the discrimination scandal and his teammates Santiago Socino and Pumas Guido Petti, who faced suspension after posting racial posts between 2011 and 2013.
The decision boiled down with Argentina letting its players escape the commotion. The management said that the apologies and good conduct over the years were why punishments are already 'unnecessary.'
Aston Hewitt heavily slammed the organization after saying that what the Argentine players did was out of ignorance and immaturity.
