Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic Remain on Course for Wimbledon Showdown, Book Quarterfinal Spots

Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer remained on course for yet another Grand Slam title showdown after securing straight-set victories in the fourth round of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships on Monday.

Djokovic reached his 12th Wimbledon quarterfinal with a comprehensive 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 win over Chile's Cristian Garin. The world no. 1 started the match like a house on fire as Djokovic did not drop a point in the first two games. Djokovic continued his dominance the rest of the way as he won all of his service games against Garin and converted five of his 12 break point opportunities.

Records continue to fall for Djokovic and Federer

It was a historic win for Djokovic, who is aiming to equal Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal's record tally of 20 Grand Slam titles. With his victory against Garin, Djokovic improved to 76-10 at Wimbledon as he has now reached the quarterfinals stage or better on 10 of his past 11 appearances at the All England Club.

Djokovic has now reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the 50th time. That pales in comparison, however, to the record set by Roger Federer hours later. The Swiss maestro booked a place in the Grand Slam quarters for a whopping 58th time with a 7-5, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Italy's Lorenzo Sonego.

With the win, the 39-year-old Federer is now the oldest quarterfinalist in the Open era, breaking the record held by the great Ken Rosewall by 113 days.

Federer also recorded his 105th match win at Wimbledon in his career, tying Rafael Nadal for most such wins at a Grand Slam in the Open era, with the Spaniard having 105 match wins Roland Garros.

However, the next generation is coming for Federer and Djokovic as a pair of Canadian youngsters reached their maiden Wimbledon quarterfinal appearances on Monday. Denis Shapovalov recorded a 6-1, 6-3, 7-5 victory over eighth seed Roberto Bautista Agut, while 20-year-old Felix Auger-Aliassime netted the biggest win of his career, upsetting No. 4 seed Alexander Zverev, 6-4, 7-6 (6), 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, in a marathon five-setter.

Next Gen has arrived at Wimbledon

Shapovalov and Auger-Aliassime made history together as they became the first Canadian men to advance to the quarterfinals of the same Grand Slam tournament.

There were three other first-timers in the quarterfinals of the men's draw as Marton Fucsovics, Matteo Berrettini, and Karen Khachanov all reached the last eight.

Fucsovics became the first man from Hungary to reach the quarterfinals at Wimbledon since 1948 after beating No. 5 seed Andrey Rublev, 6-3, 4-6, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3. It was an emotional win for Fucsovics, who lost to Rublev four times earlier this season.

On the other hand, Berrettini became the first Italian man since Davide Sanguinetti in 1998 to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals by defeating unseeded Ilya Ivashka in three sets, 6-4, 6-3, 6-1.

Khachanov made the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in bizarre fashion, outlasting American Sebastian Korda in five sets. The fifth set of their epic encounter featured 13 service breaks, with Khachanov eventually prevailing 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 5-7, 10-8.
