It looks like Conor McGregor isn't done with the Octagon just yet. A day after suffering a gruesome leg break in his UFC 264 loss to Dustin Poirier in Las Vegas, Nevada, McGregor appeared to be in good spirits after undergoing surgery to repair the fracture in his left leg.

McGregor upbeat after leg surgery

McGregor quickly posted his reaction on Twitter on Sunday after the operation, saying, "Just out of the surgery room guys! Surgery went excellent! Feeling tremendous! 6 weeks on crutch and we build back! Let's go! God bless."

Conor McGregor's manager, Audie Attar, released an official statement regarding the surgery, saying, "Conor is in recovery after 3 hours of surgery. The surgery was successful repairing fractures of his tibia and fibula. His physicians included Dr. Neal ElAttrache from [Kerlan-Jobe], Conor's long time orthopedist, and trauma surgeon Dr. Milton Little from Cedars-Sinai. Both doctors are confident that with time he will make a full recovery. We anticipate his return to the octagon."

McGregor suffered the injury at the end of the first round after being hit with a combination by Poirier. When McGregor planted his left foot in the closing seconds of the opening round, his leg suddenly buckled with replays later showing it bending gruesomely. That left referee Herb Dean no other option but to declare a TKO win (doctor's stoppage) for Poirier at 5:00 of the first round.

Poirier to face Oliveira next

With Poirier emerging victorious in the much-anticipated trilogy bout, UFC president Dana White confirmed that his next opponent would be the lightweight champion, Charles Oliveira. McGregor's future is less certain, but White is confident he will be back in the Octagon soon, saying, "When Conor is healed and ready to go, we'll do the rematch, I guess. Poirier will do his thing until Conor is ready."

Poirier agreed with White's sentiment, saying he and McGregor "are going to fight again, whether it's in the Octagon or on the sidewalk." It will be interesting to see what kind of shape McGregor will be in when that fight occurs in the future, given the severity of his leg injury.

Despite McGregor's latest remarks, many still speculate that Sunday's lightweight clash is the Notorious' last fight in the Octagon. He has won just once in the UFC in the last five years and suffered knockout losses to Poirier in each of his last two matches.

Before the gruesome leg injury, Poirier was already dominating McGregor, landing hard ground-and-pound efforts from the top position that caused the Irishman's left ear to bleed.

Don't tell McGregor that he is finished, though, as he looked forward to his eventual return, saying, "Onwards and upwards we go. We dust ourselves off. We build ourselves back and we come back better than ever. Let's go team."
