Former Lakers Star Dennis Schroder Gets Bashed on Social Media After Huge Contract Blunder

Social media users are wreaking havoc again, this time with former Los Angeles Lakers star Dennis Schroder as their main target. The 27-year-old German star is in the news lately, after signing a one-year, $5.9 million contract with the Boston Celtics.

That caught the attention of NBA fans everywhere as Schroder was one of the top free agents in the NBA market heading into the offseason. He was targeting a deal worth $30 million per year, but the market did not pan out for Schroder, who had to settle for a taxpayer mid-level exception deal.

Schroder loses $78 million in huge contract blunder

Twitter users quickly pounced upon the announcement of the deal as they shamed Schroder for turning down a huge contract extension with the Lakers last season. The Lakers gave Schroder a four-year extension worth $84 million in total after acquiring him from the Oklahoma City Thunder in a trade before the start of the 2020-21 season.

Schroder turned down the lucrative offer during the regular season as he was expecting a much larger deal in the offseason. But that decision backfired, making him lose more than $78 million in the process.

Barflaan Tedoe said, "Praying for that man Dennis Schroder's mental health. I lost 20$ the other day and couldn't breathe. Can only imagine what he's going through."

NFL superstar and now TV pundit Shannon Sharpe also took aim at Schroder in his "Undisputed" show, saying that he overplayed the market and his ability. "One of two people need to go, either fire his agent or fire himself, but someone has to go. He fumbled the bag."

Schroder looking to bounce back with the Boston Celtics

Schroder is not letting the negative press affect him as he announced the deal on his Instagram account. He said that the Boston Celtics are one of the best franchises in NBA history, and it will be an honor to put on the green and white jersey and do what he loves most.

Schroder will look to bounce back with a vengeance after a turbulent 2020-21 season that wrecked his free agency plans. He averaged 15.4 points and 5.8 assists last season in 61 games played as a starter for the Lakers. Schroder was also involved in controversy late in the regular season when he missed 11 days after entering the NBA's health and safety protocols.

Schroder then told a German publication that he and LeBron James were the only Lakers that still weren't vaccinated, putting unwarranted attention to the four-time NBA MVP. Schroder didn't help his cause in the playoffs, averaging just 14.3 points in the loss to the Phoenix Suns, shooting a low 40.3 percent from the field and 30.3 percent from beyond the arc.
