After suffering from two consecutive playoff exits, the Phoenix Suns are continuing the retooling of the squad.

The franchise has notified future Hall-of-Fame point guard Chris Paul that he will be waived, making him an unrestricted free agent this offseason, according to Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report and TNT.

The 38-year-old star is expected to become one of the top free agents on the market this summer, and he plans to play for several more years, looking to join a championship contender.

Paul was acquired by Phoenix in 2020 from the Oklahoma City Thunder. Alongside star Devin Booker, they led the team to a berth at the 2021 NBA Finals, coming up short against the Milwaukee Bucks.

Paul and Booker helped the franchise achieve their best regular season record, going 64-18 the following season. However, they were eliminated in Game 7 at home by the Dallas Mavericks in the second round of the 2022 NBA Playoffs by more than 30 points.

Phoenix Suns Continue Retooling of Roster

The Suns officially introduced a new owner in February, with billionaire businessman Mat Ishbia acquiring a majority stake in the team. A few days into his ownership, he quickly made a huge splash, acquiring superstar Kevin Durant in one of the year's biggest transactions.

They reached the second round of the 2023 NBA Playoffs before being dismantled in six games by the Denver Nuggets. The final game of the series was a blowout at home.

The team fired head coach Monty Williams and replaced him with Frank Vogel, who mentored the Los Angeles Lakers to the 2020 NBA Championship.
