"I've been looking into all the data of the past No. 1 picks and what impact they've had. I'm trying to be better than every guy before me," the top overall pick said.

Wembanyama also mentioned that the Spurs having a better record next season than last year is what he would consider a successful rookie campaign.

The 7-foot-3 center needs to do big things if he wants to be the best top overall pick ever to play the game.

Some of the league's greatest players were selected first overall in the draft, including Hakeem Olajuwon, Allen Iverson, Tim Duncan, LeBron James, and many more.

DeAndre Ayton, Zion Williamson, Anthony Edwards, Cade Cunningham, and Paolo Banchero were some recent top picks that became stars for their teams.

Spurs looking to restart winning ways

The San Antonio Spurs are historically one of the NBA's most successful teams, winning five championships over the past 25 years.

The Spurs hold the highest winning percentage among active teams, winning 60.3% of the time.

However, the past couple of years have been a different story. The Spurs finished 22-60 in the 2022-23 NBA season, last place in the West and the third-worst in the league.

They also missed the playoffs for the fourth straight year after making the playoffs for 22 consecutive seasons from 1998 to 2019, an NBA record.
