Spanish veteran midfielder David Silva announced his retirement from professional football after 19 seasons at the senior level, playing for Valencia, Manchester City, and Real Sociedad and loan spells with Spanish clubs Eibar and Celta during the early parts of his career.

The 37-year-old's retirement was an abrupt decision, as he planned to continue playing for La Liga club Real Sociedad, with whom he has been since 2020.
However, Silva sustained an ACL tear on his left knee during the club's preseason training last week, causing him to decide to hang up his boots.
Silva is regarded as among the greatest Spanish and Manchester City players ever. He spent a decade with the Premier League club, winning multiple trophies under Roberto Mancini, Manuel Pellegrini, and Pep Guardiola. Silva is also the club's all-time second-leading assister with 122.
Silva left Manchester City in 2020 to return to Spain for Real Sociedad, where he won the 2019-20 Copa Del Rey. The final of the tournament was held in April 2021, delayed by over a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, enabling Silva to be a part of the winning squad.

Spain's Lionel Messi
Silva was an integral part of the Spain dynasty that dominated international competitions during the late 2000s and early 2010s.
The Spanish national team won three consecutive major trophies during that span - the Euro 2008, 2010 FIFA World Cup, and Euro 2012.
Former Spain manager Vicente del Bosque went as far as saying that Silva is "Spain's Lionel Messi," attributing to his important role in the team.
