The New York Mets are considering giving up another valuable asset at the conclusion of the current MLB season.

Multiple rival teams believe that the Mets might be open to the idea of trading star first baseman Pete Alonso in the upcoming offseason. The three-time All-Star has an expiring contract in 2024, and a potential extension is not on the horizon for both sides.

The Mets recently traded many of their assets during the MLB trade deadline after the team failed to match pre-season expectations.

The team began the fire sale by sending closer David Robertson to the NL East rival Miami Marlins last week. Three-time Cy Young winner Max Scherzer was subsequently sent to the Texas Rangers in exchange for prospect Luisangel Acuña.

Mark Canha, Dominic Leone, Tommy Pham, and Justin Verlander were among those dealt in the final hours before the trade deadline in a series of moves that seemingly marked the waving of the white flag this season.

Disappointing season for the New York Mets

After assembling the most expensive roster in MLB history by a wide margin during the past offseason with a payroll of about $365 million, the 2023 MLB season hasn't exactly been the expectations of the New York Mets management and fans.

The team is struggling to post a winning record and make a run at a playoff spot with a dismal 50-56 slate.
