The New York Mets introduced their new baseball operations president, David Stearns, on Monday, October 2.

The 38-year-old dynamic executive talked about many things, including the future of their star first baseman Pete Alonso.

The three-time MLB All-Star has been the subject of trade rumors throughout the season, with uncertainty surrounding his future with the club. But on his first day at the office, Stearns was clear about Alonso's place on the team heading to the new campaign.

"I expect Pete to be the Opening Day first baseman next year. Pete's an important member of this team. He's an important member of this organization. I think we're really fortunate to have him," Stearns said about Alonso.

Alonso is set to become a free agent after the conclusion of the 2024 season, leading to speculation about a potential transaction during the 2023 MLB Trade deadline, but the 2019 All-MLB First Team member ultimately remained with the team.
