Tyrann Mathieu Has Torn ACL? 'Honey Badger' Out For Season With Torn Ligaments In Left Knee [VIDEO]

Arizona Cardinals rookie safety Tyrann Mathieu has been declared out for the remainder of the season after suffering a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee during the team's 30-10 win over St. Louis on Monday.

According to ESPN, an MRI on Monday confirmed the injuries and Mathieu must now wait at least 10 days for his LCL to sufficiently heal before undergoing surgery. Recovery could take as long as nine months.

Mathieu was injured with about nine minutes remaining in the third quarter on a free kick return after the Cardinals had scored on a safety. After being hit, Mathieu got up and tried to jog off the field but his knee quickly gave out on him and he had to be carted to the locker room.

After falling to the third round of the draft largely based on the off-the-field issues, Mathieu has been one of the league's top rookie defenders this season and was widely considered a leading candidate for defensive rookie of the year honors.

Mathieu had 63 tackles for the Cardinals, second best on the team, to go along with two interceptions and a forced fumble. He was named NFC Rookie of the Month in October.
