Cleveland Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell is one of the NBA's most-sought commodities right now, with several teams interested in the 6-foot-3 guard's services.

The 27-year-old has at least one more season remaining on his contract, and the 2025-26 season is a player option for him. This contract timeline positions him as a desirable asset for teams aiming for a championship immediately or soon.

The Cavaliers might be increasingly concerned as the four-time NBA All-Star has not yet committed to a contract extension with the team, raising questions about their ability to retain him.

However, Mitchell offered a compelling reason for his choice to delay signing an extension with Cleveland for now.

"I want it to be known that I still have the opportunity to sign an extension next summer. I don't think a lot of people understand that aspect. I'm really excited about what we've got going in here and I think that's the biggest thing. We can do something special," the 2018 NBA Slam Dunk Contest champion said during the team's media day last October.

Given the Cavaliers' significant setbacks due to injuries to key players such as big man Evan Mobley and guard Darius Garland, their chances of making a deep playoff run this season are severely hampered.

Trading Mitchell at the height of his value could allow them to focus on rebuilding without the uncertainty of his potential departure.

3 Teams That Should Pursue Donovan Mitchell Before Trade Deadline

1. Brooklyn Nets

The Brooklyn Nets are currently a play-in level team, holding the ninth spot in the Eastern Conference with a 15-20 record.

However, they still face competition from the Atlanta Hawks and Chicago Bulls for the two play-in spots. Acquiring Mitchell makes them a lock for the playoffs, as they already boast a solid roster featuring Spencer Dinwiddie and Cam Thomas. The team only needs a bona fide star to lead it.

2. New York Knicks

The New York Knicks are one of the sleepers in the Eastern Conference, and their recent trade to acquire forward OG Anunoby signals their intention to elevate their level of play.

Their roster already boasts the presence of an established star, Jalen Brunson. Bringing Mitchell into the mix could propel the Knicks into serious contention within the Eastern Conference.

3. Miami Heat

The Miami Heat are a win-now team with their championship window open, with stars Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo at the peak of their prowess.

Having made the NBA Finals in two of the last four seasons, the Heat fell short of winning the title because they lacked the firepower to go toe-to-toe with their Finals opponents.

Mitchell could be the missing piece they need, putting them in a prime position to finally win it all.
