On Wednesday, Robert Griffin III avoided showing anger during a news conference to announce his benching for the rest of the season.
That doesn't mean he's not angry about losing his job for the rest of the season to Kirk Cousins, the NFL.com reported Thursday.
According to NFL.com, the Washington Redskins "franchise quarterback" is "extremely angry" to have been shut down, NFL Media insider Ian Rappaport said on "NFL Total Access Kickoff."
And while some media reports have speculated that the Redskins will use these three games as a showcase of Cousins' talents to see whether they can trade him for a high draft pick. But would an angry Griffin himself demand a trade?
NFL Media columnist Michael Silver wrote that Redskins owner Daniel Snyder was, indeed, receptive to the idea of ending RGIII's season early to ensure a full offseason, as coach Mike Shanahan suggested during the news conference.
Until this point, Griffin had a tenuous relationship only with Shanahan, but how happy could he be with the owner who signed off on quarterback switch?
Silver went on to report that sources close to the Redskins situation confirmed that the real reason for the benching has been Griffin's performance. Former NFL football player-turned ESPN studio analyst Mark Schlereth agreed that Griffin's play was the reason for the change to Cousins.
He actually has more passing yards this season through 13 games (3,203 yards) than he had in 2012 (3,200 yards in 15 games). But Griffin has attempted 35.1 passes per game this season, compared to 26.2 in 2012. He has thrown 16 touchdown passes, 12 interceptions, had completion percentage of 60.1 and rushed for 489 yards in 2013. Griffin had 20 TDs, five interceptions, completed 65.6 percent of his passes and had 815 rushing yards last season.
But then why make up the notion that the Redskins are shutting down Griffin for health reasons? Shanahan also told the media before he conferred with Griffin that he was considering benching Griffin earlier in the week.
Like most media outlets, MMQB.SI.com speculated that a coaching change likely will take place in the offseason. If that is the case, why is the Snyder, whose friendship with Griffin supposedly is a key piece in the acrimony between owner and coach, allowing Shanahan to go against Griffin's wishes?
RGIII has completed two years of a four-year, $21 million contract. If Snyder or Shanahan, or both, don't tell him what's going on, he may be the one who might consider to shut it down beyond next season and get out of his contract with Washington.
