Following Iowa's stunning  82-79 loss to Nebraska, college basketball phenomenon Caitlin Clark was only eight points short of the Division I Women College Basketball all-time scoring record.

Clark was sensational throughout the contest, dropping 31 points, 10 assists, and eight rebounds. She looked poised to not only win the game but cement herself in the lore of college basketball greatness by breaking the scoring record; however, a rough fourth quarter allowed the win to slip away from Hawkeyes' hands.

She scored 17 points with five assists in the first half, continuing her annual dominance against Nebraska, a team she has averaged 35 points against in the regular season throughout her legendary college basketball career.

Then the fourth quarter happened.

Clark and Iowa held onto the lead going into the fourth quarter, but she was held scoreless throughout the period, allowing the Huskers to make a 14-point comeback.

Husker guard Jaz Shelley hit a big three-point shot in the fourth quarter to give Nebraska the lead with 30.2 seconds on the clock. She then hit two big free throws to seal the game in favor of the Huskers.

Iowa missed 13 out of 17 shots in the period and Clark failed to get it going in the fourth quarter, missing several big shots. The Cornhuskers outscored Iowa 27-10 in the final period to give them the win.

Clark entered the game needing just 39 points to break the scoring record, one held by current Las Vegas Aces forward Kelsey Plum; now she is just eight points away.

Clark has been on a tear so far this season, being known as one of the best players in college basketball averaging 32.1 points, 8.3 assists, and 7.0 rebounds per game.

In the process of trying to break the all-time scoring record, she broke another record instead, becoming the sixth player in NCAA women's basketball to record 1,000 assists.

Clark has another shot to break the record on Thursday in Iowa City, when the Hawkeyes return home to face Michigan.
