Chiefs Dropping Marquez Valdes-Scantling

The Kansas City Chiefs are releasing wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling, a league source revealed to ESPN.

The Super Bowl Champs hope to free up $12 million in the salary cap by releasing the veteran wide receiver.

Valdes-Scantling spent the last two seasons in Kansas City after signing a three-year $30 million contract after four seasons with the Packers, previously playing with Aaron Rodgers.

He had a disappointing season, putting up career lows in catches at 21 and receiving yards with only 215. He had his best statistical season in 2022 with the Chiefs, with 42 catches for 687 yards and two touchdowns.

Despite the lackluster regular season numbers, he has consistently shown up in the playoffs for the Chiefs.

Valdes-Scantling put up 116 receiving yards and a touchdown in the AFC Championship Game.

He had a big-time 33-yard catch in the 2024 AFC Championship game against the Baltimore Ravens to seal the game, sending the Chiefs to another Super Bowl.

The speedy wideout carried the decent play into the Super Bowl, scoring a touchdown.

Throughout his time in Kansas City, he had posted.

He had 63 receptions, 1,002 yards, and three touchdowns in two seasons for the Chiefs.

This move made sense for Chiefs from a financial sense. The team would be clearing up $12 million in cap space in hopes to re-sign All-Pro pass rusher, Chris Jones.

The news comes after the Chiefs informed star cornerback L'Jarius Sneed that they intend to franchise tag him.

Valdes-Scantling is coming off one of the worst seasons throughout his six years in the NFL. This last season he had 44 dropped passes, which held one of the highest drop rates in the NFL.

Now, the Chiefs would look to move forward with other receivers on their roster next season. This includes a breakout season from rookie Rashee Rice, along with Justin Watson, Skyy Moore, Kadarius Toney, and Justyn Ross; who all played pivotal roles throughout the season.
