Where Do the Commanders Stand on Sam Howell? Will They Trade Him?

Sam Howell expressed last season how much he wants to win with the Washington Commanders.

This was around the time when his team was still a decent one. They started the 2023 season with a 3-3 record. Before that, they went 3-0 in the pre-season games.

However, things went south for them. For him, too.

They finished the 2023 season with the second-worst record of 4-13, next only to the Carolina Panthers' 2-15.

Howell's stats were decent in the first half of the season, but his accuracy suffered in the second half. He posted a 63.4 completion percentage, 3,946 yards, 21 touchdowns, and the NFL-worst 21 interceptions.

There is now a change of command in the Commanders as former Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn was hired to replace head coach Ron Rivera.

Quinn provided hints of what will happen next with the team.

"Your words. Not mine," he told a reporter during his introductory press conference when asked about rebuilding.

"I would say this is a 'recalibrate' - you know, finding our north again."

"So no, you will not hear me say the word 'rebuild' at all."

The Commanders will pick no. 2 in the 2024 NFL draft on April 25, and many believe they will choose a quarterback, suggesting Sam Howell will be out before the new season starts.

Sam Howell trade has high possibility

A recent NFL 2024 mock draft projected that six quarterbacks would be taken in the first round.

The Commanders are predicted to take LSU's Jayden Daniels at no. 2.

Daniels, who won the 2023 Heisman Trophy, is regarded as among the best talents in the pool. He is a double threat. He threw 40 TD passes with 4 interceptions last season and ran 2,019 yards and 22 TDs over the past two seasons.

Howell, only 23 years old and picked in the fifth round of the 2022 draft, had the worst half of 2023. He made 612 pass attempts-the most of any starter and got sacked 65 times (league-worst), too.

Several insiders suggested that the regime change might see Howell fall out of favor in the roster.

"With a new brain trust taking over and holding the No. 2 overall pick in a quarterback-rich draft, it's hard to believe they won't start over with their own elite prospect. The only question is which one they'll take," NFC East reporter Ralph Vacchiano wrote.

"People around the NFL believe new Washington offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury loves USC's Caleb Williams, but they might have to trade up to get him - and if the Bears are amenable to that, they'd reportedly set an enormous asking price."

Vacchiano added that multiple teams have expressed interest in Howell.

It will be hard to resist picking a QB in a batch filled with many promising play-callers.

It would be logical for them to let go of Howell and get the best package to enforce the recalibration they hope to do.

Howell might find himself in another franchise where he will be the designated starter.

Aside from the no. 2 pick, Commanders will also pick 36th and 40th.
