Charlotte Hornets star LaMelo Ball has faced injury setbacks over the past two seasons following his breakout All-Star appearance in 2021-22.

The 22-year-old point guard was sidelined for the remainder of the 2023-24 season after participating in just 22 games due to a recurring right ankle injury, the same one he fractured in the previous season.

LaMelo's father, LaVar Ball, has provided an intriguing perspective on why his son has been plagued by numerous injuries, mainly focusing on his ankle troubles in recent years.

"A lot of things have to do with them raggedy shoes that Melo be wearing. Them shoes are not made the right way for him. That's why he keeps tweaking his ankle every single time," LaVar told journalist Bill Reiter of CBS Sports in an exclusive interview.

Ball inked a signature sneaker deal with German brand Puma after being drafted in 2020. Since then, the 2021 NBA Rookie of the Year's signature shoe line has seen the launch of three models, with the latest being the PUMA MB.03.

LaVar Ball also criticizes training regimen for his two sons' injuries

In addition to LaMelo, LaVar Ball's eldest son, point guard Lonzo Ball of the Chicago Bulls, has been sidelined since February 2022 due to a knee injury.

LaVar believes a different training regimen may contribute to his sons' injury struggles.

"The reason they hurt is because they got away from me. And they start doing these roody-poo workouts. Because if you keep running them hills, you're going to keep that power and that strength. But you start dealing with these rubber bands and doing this lightweight stuff, of course you're going to start breaking down," he added.
