A Bristol County Superior Court judge has placed a hold on Aaron Hernandez's North Attleborough mansion while a wrongful death suit filed by the family of Odin Lloyd remains pending against the former NFL star.
According to the Boston Globe, Judge Richard T. Moses is also weighing whether or not he will block the New England Patriots from paying the 24-year-old former tight end the $3.25 million he is still owed. The newspaper reports the Lloyd family contends that the money, which is now subject to a pending union grievance, should instead to be awarded to Lloyd's estate as part of any imminent legal judgement.
The Globe adds the ruling effectively bars Hernandez from selling the sprawling $1.26 million house before the lawsuit is resolved. Hernandez has pleaded not guilty in the June 17 killing and his attorneys have characterized the evidence gathered against him as weak and predicted he will be cleared. He remains held without bail at the Bristol County Jail.
Charles Rankin, a lawyer representing Hernandez in the criminal case, did not object to the judge's order, but requested that his client be permitted to revisit the matter at a later date when he retains counsel for the lawsuit. Moses granted that request during the brief hearing.
Patriots attorney Andrew Phelan told the judge that the team does not believe it owes Hernandez any money and has reached an agreement with the Lloyd family in which the team has agreed not to pay any additional funds to Hernandez in exchange for being dropped as a defendant from the suit.
