Cincinnati Reds rookie outfielder Tyler Callihan has a long road to recovery after suffering a savage forearm fracture in a defensive play against Atlanta.

He would be unavailable to play for at least two months.

Tyler Callihan Injury Update: Reds Rookie Undergoes Surgery Following Arm Fracture

According to TMZ Sports, the Cincinnati Reds have suffered a rough setback. Highly touted rookie Tyler Callihan will be out of action for several weeks after surgery to repair a severe arm injury.

The 24-year-old left fielder experienced a gruesome break of both bones in his forearm in a game earlier this week against the Atlanta Braves.

Callihan, who signed a $1.5 million contract with the Reds, was trying to catch a deep fly ball hit by Matt Olson at Truist Park when tragedy happened.

He crashed hard into the outfield wall, collapsing instantly and clutching his arm in agony. The eerie moment was live on the broadcast, shocking fans and teammates.

Reds Manager is Hopeful Callihan Will Bounce Back

Only a day after the accident, Callihan had successful surgery on Tuesday to mend the broken bones. Surgeons placed a metal plate to hold the forearm stable, a standard procedure for this type of injury.

Reds manager Terry Francona gave a guarded but hopeful report to The Athletic, stating, "He's young. He'll be okay. It's gonna take a little while."

While the injury is severe, the timeline indicates that Callihan could return in the second half of the season if his rehabilitation goes well.

Tyler Callihan's Resilience Through Injuries

This latest blow continues a dismal trend in Callihan's brief professional career. The third-round draft choice already has endured several physical setbacks since going pro.

In 2021, he injured his ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his elbow in a diving play and was out for extended periods. And then in 2022, Callihan tore a thumb ligament when involved in a car accident. Nevertheless, he's always battled back to make his way back onto the field even stronger.

"Means more than you know. Be back soon," Callihan told the Reds fans.
