The Cleveland Browns' "non-football" meeting with Kirk Cousins did not bear fruit in April, but the organization is not yet done with post-draft trades.

The latest rumor indicates that trading Greg Newsome II could be a part of the team's future plans in prioritizing younger talents and draft picks.

Greg Newsome II established himself at Northwestern University for three years, from 2018 until 2020. Despite dealing with injuries, Newsome developed a reputation as a lockdown cornerback. Dawgs by Nature reported that Newsome had an average coverage grade of 72.5, indicating that he was a solid starter a few years back.

In only 21 games for Northwestern, he had 71 total tackles, one tackle for loss, and one interception. His impressive play was all that was needed to earn him a first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, selected 26th overall by the Browns.

Consistent Play in Cleveland

As a league member, Newsome has consistently made contributions to the Browns' defense. In four seasons, he has accumulated 155 total tackles and three interceptions. His impressive rookie season led to his selection on the 2021 NFL All-Rookie Team, making him a standout young cornerback in the league.

Even with these accomplishments, Cleveland is said to be open to trading Newsome. The Browns are in transition and can look to cash in on Newsome's worth by acquiring younger players or future draft picks.

Contract Situation Could Trigger Trade

One of the biggest drivers of trade rumors is Newsome's contract situation, according to Sports Illustrated. The 2024 season is the last year of his rookie contract, as the Browns picked up his fifth-year option. Yet with no extension beyond the rookie contract, Newsome will be an unrestricted free agent in 2025.

If Cleveland is not going to extend him, there is no reason not to trade the burgeoning cornerback now. Allowing him to leave for nothing next offseason would be a huge loss for a team that wants to get better in the future.

The Browns haven't lived up to projections with their current roster foundation. Injuries and inconsistency have had them running in circles, unable to establish rhythm or success in an extremely competitive AFC North. That reality has put even gifted veterans like Newsome on the trade block as the front office assesses its long-term vision.

Cleveland might choose to accumulate picks and generate cap space freedom by trading Newsome. Conversely, if the Browns regard him as the backbone of their defense, they can negotiate a contract extension before the start of the season.
