All the 2025 NBA Mock Draft reports point out Cooper Flagg being the unanimous No. 1 overall pick, and the Dallas Mavericks will get him right away with a little drama. But, fans are torn in choosing who will be the top 2 and top 3 picks for the first round.
According to a new rumor, Dylan Harper is most likely next to Flagg. With the San Antonio Spurs on the verge of landing him, the Philadelphia 76ers will do their best to snatch the Rutsger guard.
Dylan Harper Becomes Clear-Cut No. 2 Prospect
While Flagg has locked down the top spot, Rutgers guard Dylan Harper has separated himself from the rest of the field as the No. 2 overall prospect, according to CBS Sports. The 6-foot-6 combo guard has scouts raving about his explosiveness, court vision, and ability to create off the dribble.
Harper's rise up the board could mean that more teams might get interested in him, especially with the San Antonio Spurs holding the second pick.
Spurs Facing Backcourt Logjam
San Antonio has a problem with their current roster. Having added De'Aaron Fox at the trade deadline and already boasting Devin Vassell and 2024 No. 1 pick Stephon Castle, the Spurs' backcourt is stacked. Getting Harper might make matters rotationally complex. But initial reporting indicates the team prefers to keep the pick and take the most talented player available, position notwithstanding.
The thinking is simple: with Victor Wembanyama as the franchise player, the Spurs are all about accumulating high-level young players and figuring out positions down the line. But that hasn't dissolved trade rumors.
Sixers Reportedly Interested in No. 2 Pick
As Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reported and confirmed by Jake Fischer, the Philadelphia 76ers have called the Spurs regarding a trade for the No. 2 pick. The Sixers hold the No. 3 pick but are looking to move up a spot and grab Harper as the co-star for Tyrese Maxey.
All Philadelphia wants is to secure an effective backcourt mate for Maxey to take their offense to the next level. Harper's playmaking and shot-creation would bring that instantly. The big sticking point? The Sixers lack immediate draft assets, although they might be able to package future first-round picks as sweeteners.
Spurs' Draft Strategy Hinges on Fit vs. Value
For San Antonio, giving up just one slot might not be a huge concession, particularly if they feel some other top wing is a better positional complement to Wembanyama. They'd pay with future draft picks or player value to make the trade worthwhile in return.
However, San Antonio wouldn't want to slip much further down in the draft rankings. Their plan is still straightforward: surround Wembanyama with other top young talent when he is on a rookie deal.
If the Sixers could pull off this effectively, they would be the ultimate wild-card team for the 2025 NBA Draft. But first, the Spurs would need some important assets that Philadelphia would want to give up.
