Michael Vick pleaded guilty to federal dogfighting charges, yet the shadow of what happened 18 years ago still lingers. The issue resurfaced this week after Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray posted a photo of himself wearing a Virginia Tech Michael Vick jersey while standing next to a pit bull.
The image quickly drew criticism from fans and animal rights advocates, given Vick's history of animal cruelty. Although his six-year involvement in dogfighting remains one of the most infamous scandals in sports history, it is now only rarely discussed.
Murray Offers Public Apology
At his Wednesday news conference, Murray confronted the criticism head-on and issued an apology.
"In no way, shape or form do I condone animal cruelty or dogfighting," Murray said, via Josh Weinfuss of ESPN.

Murray, 27 now, said that he was just nine years old when Vick's operation was initially revealed. He said the post was in no way a tribute to Vick's past actions but a naive selection of clothing.

Clarifying Intentions and Respect for Animals
Kyler Murray assured fans that his own pets, two American bulldogs, are given love and care. He added that he treated his dogs like kings, and he apologized for what he had done. The Instagram post has been taken down since then.

The quarterback explained that the jersey and the dog's relationship was coincidental and not intended as a statement.
The Vick Conversation Should Still Be Discussed
Even though Vick served out his prison time and rebuilt his image as a football analyst and coach, his previous actions remain contentious. The dogfighting controversy had a lasting effect on sports culture, with people viewing it as a warning about public image and accountability.
According to USA Today, Vick was arrested in 2007 and later pleaded guilty to charges related to his involvement in dogfighting. Authorities reported that Vick killed approximately seven dogs by hanging and drowning. He faced up to five years in prison on two felony charges and ultimately served 23 months before being released early for good behavior.
