Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek are urging the four Grand Slam tournaments to return to the negotiation table. The call comes amid growing concerns over revenue sharing, player welfare, and the lack of consultation on decisions that directly impact athletes.
The WTA stars argue that open dialogue is essential for maintaining a fair and sustainable tennis ecosystem.
WTA Stars Know Open Conversations Are Very Much Needed
Speaking at the WTA Finals in Riyadh via The Straits Times, Swiatek spoke to the need for continued dialogue. The Polish tennis player said that "it would be great" if the Grand Slams allowed open discussions beyond prize money. She added that more important matters, such as health plans and pensions, should also be focused on.
"So I think it's a setback and the players are not happy with it."
World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka echoed Swiatek's sentiment, underlining the urgency of the matter. She said that it's now the time to "sit at a table and come to a conclusion that everyone will be happy with."
The Belarusian athlete suggests that there should be a transparent and equitable resolution for such matters.
Players Seek Greater Share of Revenue and Welfare
Earlier this year, a group of top stars from both the women's and men's tours sent an open letter to the four Grand Slam events seeking a bigger share of tournament revenues. They also called for financial contributions toward welfare programs funded by the tours to help pay for pension and health plans. These programs would provide long-term security and support for them during and after their careers.
Consultation on Changes Affecting Players
Another key demand from players is to be consulted when Slams consider changes that could affect them directly. These are things like changes in scheduling, in tournament rules, or in ways of allocating revenue. Players feel that their input is critical to ensure decisions are taken that prioritize athlete welfare while maintaining the integrity of the tournaments.
Sabalenka will face Amanda Anisimova in the semifinals of the WTA Finals. Anisimova defeated Swiatek in the group stage of the event.
