The father of Memphis basketball coach Josh Pastner may become famous for more than being Josh Pastner's father.
FoxSports.com is reporting that Pastner revealed in a postgame interview following Memphis' 79-69 win over Temple in Philadelphia on Saturday night that his dad and grandfather made a reel-to-reel tape recording of Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point performance on March 2, 1962 during the Philadelphia Warriors' 169-147 victory over the New York Knicks.
Pastner was asked a question about his ties to Philadelphia when he dropped the bombshell on reporters. FoxSports.com took an excerpt from the700level.com of Pastner's comments.
"My father was the ball boy for the 76ers for many, many years, and he and Wilt Chamberlain were very close. ... And in fact, my father and his father taped the game reel-to-reel in the second quarter when it was in Hershey, Pennsylvania in the 100-point game. They started when he had like 30-something; they thought it was going to be a special night. They gave it to Wilt - the 100-point game - and Wilt gave it back to my dad and my dad's dad. He gave it back to them, they boxed it up, and he's still trying to find it. He's got all kinds of boxes, and he doesn't know if he lost it. He's trying to find the sucker. ... I mean he's got jerseys of Wilt, pictures."
Chamberlain made 36 field goals that night and shot 28-of-32 from the free-throw line as the Warriors scored 90 second-half points.
Apparently, none of the reporters at the postgame news conference pressed Pastner about the information, and the reel-to-reel recording's existence remains a myth for now.
