Boston police believe Aaron Hernandez may have been the shooter in a 2012 drive-by shooting that left two men dead and another seriously injured.
Fox Sports is reporting the former New England Patriots tight end is pegged as the potential triggerman in a search warrant affidavit made public on Thursday where it is also revealed police suspect a Toyota 4Runner owned by Hernandez was also the vehicle used in the crime.
Daniel Abreu and Safiro Furtado both died in a hail of bullets moments after leaving a downtown nightclub where surveillance video reveals they came into contact with Hernandez during the night.
"There is also probable cause to believe that Aaron Hernandez was operating the suspect vehicle used in the shooting homicides of Daniel Abreu and Safiro Furtado, and may have been the shooter," a detective wrote in the warrant.
The 24-year-old Hernandez remains jailed on first-degree murder charges in the killing of former associate Odin Lloyd, whom authorities have hinted may have been killed because he had information about Hernandez's alleged involvement in drive-by killing and other violent crimes.
The Toyota 4Runner in question has since been recovered from a garage at a home owned by Hernandez's uncle. Fox reports the first inkling that Hernandez may have been involved in the Boston shooting came to light after Lloyd's death when a detective recalled recognizing Hernandez on surveillance footage obtained from the nightclub Abreu and Furtudao were visiting.
Days later a man called police and claimed the same man was involved in both shootings. "Someone accidentally spilled the beans in front of me," Fox reports the man told a police dispatcher.
