New York Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie raised some eyebrows for comments he didn't make.
Newsday reported about an interview Cromartie did with an entertainment website, Thisis50.com, which is affiliated with rapper 50 Cent. During the interview, Cromartie was asked whether he thought the NFL and professional sports in general were too harsh on marijuana users.
Talking about the NFL, he said that the substance shouldn't be banned because players are going to use it anyway.
Newsday quoted Cromartie, a three-time Pro Bowler as saying, "They need to just let it go. We're just going to do it, anyway. They just need to let it go. They need to go ahead and say, 'Y'all go ahead, smoke it, do what you need to do.'"
ESPN also reported that it sounded as if Cromartie said "We're just going to do it, anyway," as well.
Except that Cromartie never actually said "We're just going to do it, anyway." His quote was, "Players are going to do it, anyway."
A rightfully annoyed Cromartie said he was misquoted on his Twitter account.
From @CRO31: "The interview that I did on the weed policy, I never said We're I said tht (sic) Players will smoke anyway. I don't smoke so I don't care about it(.)"
He then tweeted, "I guess when there's nothing to talk in the football world this is what happens."
Cromartie's comment that the NFL should lift the ban because the rule is not impeding usage is controversial enough on its own.
Cromartie, an eight-year veteran, certainly has been around long enough to understand the NFL culture, but he could've quickly diffused the situation had he said in the interview that he doesn't use marijuana.
