Attorneys for former NFL star Darren Sharper claim L.A. prosecutors have launched an unfair Twitter war against their client that gravely diminishes his chances of getting a fair trial on rape charges.
According to TMZ, Blair Berk has filed documents on Sharper's behalf blasting the L.A. district attorney's office for conducting what she called "trial by twitter feed."
In her scathing attack, Berk also charges prosecutors have "embarked on an orchestrated press campaign, through paid publicists, to smear Mr. Sharper in the media."
Among other things, Berk alleges authorities have "intentionally distributed highly inflammatory and prejudicial, false, misleading and/or un-adjudicated evidence in this case, clearly intended to destroy Mr. Sharper's presumption of innocence and ability to get a fair trial without even a shred of evidence having ever been properly been admitted in a court of law."
The 38-year-old Sharper has been accused of drugging and raping several women in at least four different states in recent months. Thus far, he has formally been charged with two counts of rape by use of drugs, four counts of furnishing a controlled substance and one count of possession of a controlled substance, all felonies.
If convicted of all the charges the All 2000 NFL Decades Team selection faces more than in prison. Sharper is now free on $1 million bail.
