Colin Kaepernick contract: San Francisco 49ers working on $22M per year deal? [VIDEO]

The San Francisco 49ers have opened contract negotiations with upstart quarterback Colin Kaepernick that by all accounts will end in a "very large" contract being signed.

"There are many miles to go on this, of course," writes San Jose Mercury News columnist Tim Kawakami. "Any Kaepernick deal will be very large and any agreement involves many different leaps of faith. How long a deal will it be? At what salary? How much guaranteed?"

Though the 26-year-old Kaepernick remains under contract for all the 2014 season, the organization remains intent on locking him up. After leading the team to back-to-back NFC title games and a Super Bowl XLVII appearance, Kaepernick is slated to make around $973,000 this season.

CBSSports.com reports Kaepernick could net anywhere from $15-$22 million a season in a new deal.

A three-year veteran, Kaepernick passed for 3,197 yards and 21 touchdowns last season. He also ran for 524 yards and four scores. Overall, Kaepernick completed 58 percent of his passes and threw just eight interceptions.

During three 2013 postseason games, Kaepernick passed for 576 yards and three scores, as the Niners perhaps advanced to within one late Richard Sherman interception of playing in their second straight Super Bowl.
