NBA rumors: Four-point shots would make a mockery of the game

A four-point shot? A you kidding me?

Internet rumors are all the rage regarding the NBA allegedly considering introducing a four-point shot. While J.R. Smith probably loves the idea, it will turn the NBA into a mockery of itself.

The NBA is downplaying the idea. And they should be. Because it’s silly.

"No one at the NBA, nor the competition committee, has had any serious conversations about increasing the size of the floor or adding a four-point line," league spokesman Tim Frank said in a statement on Tuesday.

Maybe the talks weren’t too “serious,” but Frank is contradicting NBA president of basketball operations Rod Thorn and vice president Kiki VanDeWeghe, who acknowledged that the league office had informally weighed the possibility of making such changes.

The idea of Josh Smith chucking up half-court shots actually seems entertaining for a few minutes, but it would get old very quickly. The NBA adopted the three-point shot from the American Basketball Association starting in the 1979-80 season. Many people disliked the three-pointer when it was first introduced, but it’s a beloved part of the game today.

The same won’t happen if they decide to adopt a four-point shot. It wouldn’t be innovative. It would simply take away from the fundamentals of the game. It would discourage things such as posting up, driving to the basket and standard jump shots. It’s simply not fair for a circus shot to be worth double the amount of points as a standard basket.

If the NBA messes with the game too much, it will look like the MTV Rock N’ Jock B-Ball Jam before we know it:
