Miguel Cotto dismantled the middleweight champion of the world Saturday night in front of a raucous Madison Square Garden crowd, and re-established himself as an elite draw for future mega fights. Despite coming in as a fairly big underdog, he systematically punished Sergio Martinez, leading to speculation that Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez is next up for the Puerto Rican.
Todd DuBoef, the president of Top Rank said in the post fight press conference that they're hoping to get Cotto back in the ring in December, and that Alvarez is certainly an option. DuBoef didn't mention Alvarez by name but said, "What we like, what he likes we're going do it unified. From 160 to 147 we'll evaluate them all and decide best choice is."
There has been speculation of an eventual bout between Canelo and Manny Pacquiao in the future, with that being the grand re-introduction to cross-promotion that has been Oscar De La Hoya's recent push. His desire to work with Top Rank again pushed former Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer to leave his post, but that shouldn't affect Cotto one bit.
Pacquiao seemed like the perfect superstar to match up with Canelo, and the only one big enough in Top Rank's stable to warrant the trouble. After Cotto ran through a respected champion larger than he is though, he turned a good matchup in theory to a potential match made in heaven.
De La Hoya seems gung-ho about putting it together, perhaps imagining something similar to his Mexico vs. Puerto Rico super fight against Felix Trinidad. "I would love to work with Cotto Promotions on a possible Canelo-Cotto fight," De La Hoya said.
"July 12 is very important toward possibly seeing the pugilistic rivalry between Mexico and Puerto Rico once again. It would be Salvador [Sanchez] vs. [Wilfredo] Gomez, [Julio Cesar] Chavez Sr. vs [Edwin] Rosario, [Oscar] De La Hoya vs. [Felix] Trinidad. Huge!"
