U.S. Open 2014 Golf: Rory McIlroy Can Revive Sport Even If Tiger Woods Remains Out of Action? [VIDEO]

The U.S. Open tees off Thursday and the PGA will be facing the usual problems while Tiger Woods nurses a bad back. The television ratings for golf have been in the tank as of late, but many believe Rory McIlroy can bring the sport back to prominence starting with this weekend’s major.

Art Spander of Bleacher Report believes that Rory can use all the distractions in his life at the moment and channel it into something special. He writes that McIlroy has the potential to lead golf out of these dark, Tiger-less days:

"At 25 he has done so much, made as much history as anyone could imagine, had his triumphs and his defeats, still a kid in some ways, a mature man in many others.

His social life trumped everything else for a while as a world with a tabloid mentality watched Rory and Woz while they paraded along until, wham, as love affairs sometimes do, it went whap.

Now he is again McIlroy the golfer from Northern Ireland, and more than that, according to the latest odds, McIlroy the Open favorite, ahead of Adam Scott and Phil Mickelson."

McIlroy has been through so much as of late in his personal life that many forget that he has had a rough time in majors. Rory has an opportunity to be Rory the golfer and not Rory the man in the media making news for personal reasons. He has the chance to go out there and just play stress free golf and has an opportunity to just turn off the noise of his life.

McIlroy is the odds-on favorite to win the U.S. Open and it should be interesting to see him attempt the put his personal life aside to dig golf out of television ratings limbo.
