The 2015 MLS season is still 57 days away, but that opening day feeling came a little closer on Wednesday with the release of the regular season schedule.

5. New York Red Bulls vs. New York City FC, May 10, 7 p.m. ET

Had the MLS schedule been released two weeks ago, the first chapter of the New York derby would've topped the list. Unfortunately, incompetence has quickly defined the New York sports market. The New York Red Bulls and New York City FC are the latest culprits. As if withholding Frank Lampard from newly committed City fans wasn't bad enough, the Red Bulls decided to up the ante by firing head coach Mike Petke on Wednesday. In two seasons, Petke led the club to its only major trophy and a successful playoff run in 2014. Smart move; however, a New York derby still has enough luster to feature on the list.

4. Orlando City vs. New York City FC, Mar. 8, 5 p.m. ET

The two newest franchises in MLS open the season on opposite ends of the pitch. Both will have the opportunity to take a successful first step at the other's expense.

3. Vancouver Whitecaps vs. Portland Timbers, Mar. 28, TBD

It's the only cup that matters in MLS, and yes, that's including the MLS Cup. Winning a knockout tournament isn't as prestigious as proving your worth for 30-plus weeks like the Supporters' Shield winner does. The previous two winners of the Cascadia Cup, the Portland Timbers (2012) and Vancouver Whitecaps (2013), first collide in Week 4.

2. Los Angeles Galaxy vs. Seattle Sounders, Aug. 9, 4 p.m. ET

Two words: Steven Gerrard. The Liverpool icon finalized a deal with the Los Angeles Galaxy and is expected to join the club in July. August's clash with the Seattle Sounders will serve as his first true test in MLS.

1. New England Revolution vs. Los Angeles Galaxy, May 31, 7 p.m. ET

How about three words? MLS Cup rematch. It took extra time for Los Angeles to defeat the New England Revolution in the 2014 MLS Cup. With the 2015 fixture being held at Gillette Stadium, the opportunity is there for the Revs to exact revenge.
