Miguel Cotto Next Fight: Progress Made Toward Puerto Rican Day Parade Weekend Bout vs. Timothy Bradley or Brandon Rios?

Miguel Cotto is considered to be Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s first choice for a May 2 fight if he can't agree to terms with Manny Pacquiao, but right now Cotto's team is making contingency plans as if Mayweather-Pacquiao is going to be made.

Cotto's manager Gaby Penagaricano said that fighting in May is still possible, although a June 13 date in which Cotto would take advantage of Puerto Rican Day parade weekend is in play. A dream fight with Gennady "GGG" Golovkin is highly unlikely, and the leading candidates to be Cotto's next opponent are Timothy Bradley and Brandon Rios.

"Yes we are on schedule to make a fight in May," Penagaricano said. "We know that they are planning giant fights for that period but we still have time for that date. I don't want to discuss any names. We are working with several names."

Prior to Cotto defeating Sergio Martinez for the WBC middleweight title, Arum had discussed his desire to pit Bradley against Cotto.

"I think a lot of people might want to see a Miguel-Bradley fight," Arum said. "We've made him, I think, a major star. Timothy is a great fighter, a great kid and great in the ring. People want to see him fight, and so there are a lot of big fights out there for Tim. We've made a lot of money and we'll continue to make him a lot of money."

More recently, after Rios destroyed Mike Alvarado in Denver, Rios brought up Bradley again in a group of fighters whom he plans on having face one another.

"There are four guys [Top Rank works with] -- Jessie Vargas, Brandon Rios, Timothy Bradley and Miguel Cotto -- and we're going to see what we can do to match the four up," Arum said.

While Penagaricano insists May is in play, fans should expect Cotto to fight again in June. Should Mayweather fight Pacquiao, that will happen on May 2, with Canelo Alvarez vs. James Kirkland happening the following weekend.

If that fight doesn't happen, and Mayweather doesn't fight Cotto, Mayweather and Alvarez will have dueling cards on May 2, with Manny Pacquiao likely facing Amir Khan on May 30.
