Phelps and Johnson were long time sweethearts, but struggled to stay together over the course of eight years. They had a will-they-or-won't-they dynamic that saw them take occasional breaks amidst career concerns and personal pressures.
During one such stint apart, Phelps famously dated a 'intersex' woman named Taylor Chandler. The revelation that Chandler had been born a male created constant tabloid fodder and a PR nightmare for Phelps.

Phelps spoke to USA Today this week, and explained in his own words how much getting back together with Johnson, and getting engaged, means to him.
“She [Johnson] was the one I loved the most," he said. "Obviously we worked through some things. There’s nobody in the world I would rather be with.
"It’s been a long time. We’ve been through a lot. But I love her to death. We’ve been able to grow as a couple through everything we’ve been through, the positive changes I’ve made in my life.”
