NFL Pro Bowl No Longer NFC vs. AFC, Rosters To Be Filled In Fantasy Draft Style

The NFL is changing its format for filling Pro Bowl rosters, announcing that the NFC vs. AFC matchup has been eliminated in favor of a fantasy-style draft.

According to NFL league officials, this season’s game will feature Hall of Famers Jerry Rice and Deion Sanders as team captains and two NFL.com fantasy football champions, one for each team, picking the teams from a pool of players that were voted  in.  

Though the game still attracts tons of viewers, over the last several seasons the game has been tainted by lack of effort from players, leading to threats from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell that it could be done way with entirely.  

Players will still be voted into the game by fans, coaches and players, but no longer by conference. The draft will be Jan. 22 next year and televised on NFL Network, and the game will be Sunday, Jan. 26.

League officials also announced the game will now have a two-minute warning at the end of the first and third quarters and possession will change at the end of every quarter, giving fans more opportunities to watch teams play in the two-minute drill. Kickoffs are also being eliminated and a shorter play clock will be instituted. Zone coverages by defensive backs will now also be allowed.
