Brandon Jennings Not Guaranteed Detroit Pistons Starting Point Guard Job Says Joe Dumars

The Detroit Pistons have welcomed Brandon Jennings to town with open arms, but they’ve been just as diligent in making certain not to make the 22-year-old veteran guard any lofty promises.

One of those promises would be the job of Detroit Pistons starting point guard. The Pistons added Chauncey Billups, Will Bynum and Peyton Siva this offseason, and president of basketball operations Joe Dumars insists he gave each and every one of them the same speech.

“Yeah, you are; you right bro,” Dumars told MLive.com he told each player when they predicted to him they would win the starter’s job. “Let's see what happens.  That's exactly how it's going to be."

While Jennings surely begins training camp as the favorite to claim the spot, the final decision rests with new coach and former All-Star point guard Maurice Cheeks. Thus far, Dumars said Cheeks hasn’t committed to any one scenario.

"He said, 'Look, come in and earn it,” Dumars told MLive of Cheeks’ thinking. “I'm going to give it to whoever earns it. He said, 'Joe I'm not going to put myself in a trick box where I'm committing myself to something and it doesn't play out. He's kept it wide open.”
