Floyd Mayweather Jr. isn’t convincing anyone about staying retired, no matter how often he says he’s loving life away from the ring. Mayweather offered some thoughts about Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, boxing’s new leading man, but his comments need to be taken with a grain of salt.
“Canelo, you a good fighter, but you already know what it is when you face me, boy. Class is in session! I faced Canelo, Cotto, and Pacquiao, and I know who’s the best out of the three. I know how they all rate, and I know something all three of them guys got in common,” Mayweather said, obviously referencing his wins over them.

“I retired from the game; I didn’t let the game retire me. Every day there’s offers on the table for me to come back and fight. Every day! As of right now, I don’t got the urge to fight again.”
Perhaps Mayweather does not have the urge to fight again, but his urges to make boatloads of money are insatiable. In 2013, Mayweather and Alvarez set box office records for their pay-per-view that held strong until Mayweather and Pacquiao blew them out. Following Alvarez’s win over Cotto Saturday night, his profile has only grown, as has his credibility.

A return for a 50th and final fight makes sense for Mayweather. At 49-0, he merely tied Rocky Marciano’s unbeaten record when he retired. Mayweather also went out on a low note, facing an overmatched Andre Berto in an event boxing fans largely ignored. Lastly, the MGM Grand in Las Vegas has hosted Mayweather’s fights since 2007, is opening a new arena in 2016. Who better to open it up than “Money” himself?
Mayweather’s point that he’s beaten Alvarez, Cotto and Pacquiao already is well-taken. A new fight vs. the matured Alvarez would still sell, however. Mayweather can also take on a new challenger, such as middleweight destroyer Gennady “GGG” Golovkin, mouthy British welterweight Amir Khan, or up-and-coming knockout artist Keith “One-Time” Thurman.
The fact that Mayweather is even responding to boxing inquiries proves he’s not finished in the ring. If he was, he could spend the rest of his days doing this.
