While the Jacksonville Jaguars brass mull a solution to the team's 0-4 start, perhaps the answer was in the sky yesterday at Everbank Field. During the second quarter of the Jaguars eventual 37-3 shelling at the hands of the Indianapolis Colts (3-1), a banner sarcastically imploring that they have nothing else to lose and might as well sign free agent quarterback Tim Tebow that said, 'Tebow, Why Not?' flew over the stadium.
The banner is just the latest attempt by some Jacksonville fans to try to persuade the front office to sign Tebow, who was released by the New England Patriots out of the preseason and hasn't found much interest from any NFL teams as of yet.
Incumbent quarterback Blaine Gabbert had already thrown two interceptions by the time the banner flew over the field, and he has endured quite a rough season for Jacksonville. Gabbert is 33-for-67 (49.3%) for 300 yards and has yet to throw a touchdown this season while he's tossed five interceptions. Still, despite the lack of production on the field, the Jaguars front office is hesitant to pursue Tebow.
Last season with the Jets, Tebow was rarely used and went 6-for-8 for 39 yards without throwing a touchdown pass and had just 32 rushing attempts for 102 yards without reaching the end zone.
Tebow's star rose as an NCAA standout when he won the Heisman Trophy in his sophomore year, however after leading the Broncos to an AFC West division title in 2011-12 and winning a playoff game over the Pittsburgh Steelers in overtime before the team was eliminated, Tebow was traded to the Jets and used sparingly until he eventually was released and picked up by the Patriots who ended up cutting him.
Tebow has turned down outside endeavors such as a football league in Russia that would have paid him $1 million to appear in two games as well as a chance to play professional Rugby, and it doesn't seem like he has interest in pursuing the Canadian Football League.
The group that flew the banner overhead tried to make a splash on Sept. 16 by having a rally to convince management to bring Tebow on board, but only about 16 people showed up, according to Yahoo Sports.
The Jaguars haven't shown much interest in Tebow, but after only scoring two points in a Week 1 28-2 loss to the Chiefs, the team lost to the Raiders 19-9 in Week 2 and the Seahawks 45-17 in Week 3 before only mustering up three points in Sunday's loss.
So given the offensive struggles and the inability to sell tickets, perhaps a shot at Tebow could at least draw interest for a team that has been struggling.
If ownership still doesn't decide to sign Tebow after a banner flew overhead, it will be interesting to see what the group comes up with next.
