Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews could miss at least a month of action after suffering a broken thumb in the team's 22-9 win over NFC North division rival Detroit on Sunday.
According to NFL.com. Matthews underwent what the team describes as successful surgery on Monday, at least putting aside coach Mike McCarthy's worst fears that he would be lost for the rest of the season.
Still, any time missed by Matthews comes as a big blow for the team, currently mired in a three-way tie for first-place in the North along with Chicago and Detroit. Matthews is widely viewed as the Packers most disruptive pass rusher as well as a strong run stopper.
The Packers can only hope the strong play of 2012 first-round pick Nick Perry is a precursor to what they can expect from him over the next month when they face the Ravens, Browns, Vikings and Bears.
Matthews, 27, recorded 43 tackles and 13 sacks last season. His best statistical season came in 2010 when he registered 54 tackles and 13.5 sacks in 15 games. He was drafted by the Packers with the 26th pick in the 2009 NFL Draft and recorded 10 sacks in 16 rookie season starts.
