The latest turn on the Tim Tebow rumor mill has stopped in Cleveland, where murmurs indicated that the former NFL quarterback met with Browns' officials. Cleveland CEO Joe Banner has refuted those claims, saying the club has no interest in signing the unemployed signal caller.
According to The News-Herald, Banner said he didn't even know Tebow was in Cleveland, which goes to show that there was no meeting between the two sides. After Tebow was spotted at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport earlier in the week, rumors began to swirl that he was meeting with the Browns.
Banner quickly squashed those rumors.
"I don't know, but I'm told he was at the Cleveland Clinic," Banner told The News-Herald about the reasoning behind Tebow being in Cleveland. "The fact that I don't know should tell you that he did not meet with the Cleveland Browns."
The quarterback search was plausible as Brian Hoyer suffered a season-ending knee injury Oct. 3 and the team is left with an inconsistent Brandon Weeden and backup Jason Campbell, but Banner dispelled any rumors of Tebowmania coming to Cleveland.
The Browns (3-3) have an equal record to the Ravens (3-3) as both teams in the AFC North sit behind the Cincinnati Bengals (4-2). Weeden has gone 86-for-153 (56.2%) for 1,005 yards with four touchdowns and five interceptions, but the team isn't desperate and won't pursue Tebow.
Tebow, who was released by the Patriots during the preseason, has declined to take any offers outside of the NFL including those from a Russian football team and the Canadian Football League. The 26 year old doesn't want to give up on his dreams of playing under center in the NFL as he once did.
"I will remain in relentless pursuit of continuing my lifelong dream of being an NFL quarterback," Tebow tweeted in the summer following his release from the Patriots.
That dream hasn't gotten him far these days.
After his successful days with the Denver Broncos that led to a playoff win, Tebow had a trying time with the New York Jets where he was scarcely used and eventually released before the pursuit to further his dream was halted by the Patriots releasing him.
There were rumors of Tebow joining the winless Jacksonville Jaguars (0-6), but owner Shahid Khan said he wasn't eager to court the quarterback.
"Ah, we need a lot of good players, OK," Khan told TMZ with a laugh after he was asked about pursuing Tebow.
Tebow has a completion percentage of 47.9% in his career with 17 touchdowns and nine interceptions through 35 games, and has rushed for 989 yards on 187 carries with 12 touchdowns.
While Tebowmania swept the nation once upon a time, it has failed to get into the heads of NFL owners and CEOs throughout the league, and one of football's most popular figures remains unemployed.
