Ed Reed News: New York Jets, New England Patriots Showing Interest In Veteran Safety Cut By Texans

The New York Jets are interested in recently waived, free-agent safety Ed Reed, according to ESPN.

The Hall of Fame bound veteran was released by the Houston Texans earlier this week and cleared waivers on Wednesday, shortly before Jets coach Rex Ryan went on record in expressing his team's potential interest in him. The New England Patriots have also hinted being interested.

"I could say absolutely, yes, I'd like him on our team," Ryan told ESPN of the man he called the "greatest safety in history" just two years ago. The two previously spent seven seasons together when both were with the Baltimore Ravens.

"The big picture of right now, the current football team, I'm probably not the right guy to make all those decisions," said Ryan. "I think sometimes there's a comfort level in knowing guys, without question, guys that certainly played well for you. ... I'd like those guys, without question."

The Jets' current starters at safety are Dawan Landry, who played alongside Reed from 2006 to 2010 in Baltimore, and Antonio Allen. While praising Allen as "having the chance to be really good," Ryan has previously expressed concern that the team's top three safeties have combined for just two interceptions this season.
