Robinson Cano Free Agency: Jay Z To Be 'Intimately Involved' In Contract Talks? [VIDEO]

Hip hop mogul and Roc Nation Sports founder Jay Z plans to be "intimately involved" in the free agency negotiations related to star client Robinson Cano, according to The New York Daily News.

"That has been true for the last six months and it's certainly true now," CAA's Brodie Van Wagenen, the man actually charged with leading the negotiations, told The News. "Jay is a very, very successful businessman who has a keen understanding of value, a keen understanding of brands and a keen understanding of what this player, Robinson Cano, wants to accomplish for his career."

Van Wagenen later added Jay "has been at the table in both strategy sessions and actual negotiations with potential suitors," just as the two camps maintained things would work when they announced their partnership back in April.

During last week's GM meetings, Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner said the team soon planned to resume talks with Cano in hopes of resigning their All-Star second baseman to a longterm deal.

It won't come easily or cheaply. Van Wagenen said several teams have already expressed interest in speaking with Cano. "Teams are starting to understand that players of his magnitude don't come along very often and the opportunity to acquire them is limited," Van Wagenen told The News.

According to Van Wagenen, he and Jay Z, who officially became an agent accredited by the player's union over the summer, are devising a plan to present Cano as a "face of the franchise-type" player.
