Jameis Winston "is at peace" about the sexual assault allegations that now cloud his future, former Florida State Heisman Trophy winner and quarterback legend Charlie Ward tells ProFootballTalk.com.
Ward, who seen joking with the redshirt freshmen star along the sidelines during the Seminoles 59-3 drubbing of Syracuse on Saturday, told the website he regularly shares texts with Winston and the two have specifically talked about the ongoing scandal.
"It came out of the blue," Ward told ProFootballTalk. "The timing is very odd but for him he said he's at peace with it, so I'm at peace with it."
Like many, Ward admits Winston, a leading candidate for this year's Heisman, is taken aback that authorities waited so long to formally launch their investigation. FSU campus police were first made aware of the allegations on the night of Dec. 7, 2012, yet Tallahassee police waited nearly a year before turning over their findings to prosecutors.
In addition, Winston's attorney, Tim Jansen, maintains he was told as recently as February that the case had been closed and his client cleared. Since then, 2nd Judicial Circuit state's attorney Willie Meggs has assigned two investigators to handle the case, including interviewing the victim who has reportedly since moved out of state.
Meggs previously vowed to ProFootballTalk to "get to the bottom" of things "and do the right thing." He later added "there is a victim out there right now whose world has tumbled down around her... my job is to make sure that this victim or any victim of a crime has their rights protected."
