New England Patriots restricted free agent cornerback Malcolm Butler remains unsigned and without a team. The New England Patriots are on a wait and see mode with regards to the Malcolm Butler situation. The only team that has shown interest in Malcolm Butler are the New Orleans Saints. From the looks of it, the New Orleans Saints are dead serious in signing up Malcolm Butler.
In a report from ALL 22, the New Orleans are said to be restructuring left tackle Terron Armstead's contract to have more cap space with the hopes of offering Malcolm Butler more money. Terron Armstead reportedly agreed to have his contract restructured.
According to the report, the New Orleans Saints converted Terron Armstead's $5 million roster bonus into a signing bonus. This would help spread the cap hit out over a deal that runs through the 2021 season. That gives the New Orleans Saints additional money to offer Malcolm Butler.
Because of the restructuring, the New Orleans Saints will $4 million in cap space for this season and an additional $1 million cap space that will be charged in the next four seasons. As a result, the New Orleans Saints now have $13.1 million in cap space. That amount of cap space should be enough to sign Malcolm Butler to a long term contract.
Of course, all of this cap space maneuvering still depends on whether the New England Patriots match the New Orleans Saints offer sheet to Malcolm Butler or not. Malcolm Butler is a restricted free agent and the New England Patriots still have the right to match the offer sheet.
If the New England Patriots do not match the offer, the New Orleans Saints would have to give up their 11th overall pick in this year's draft. Another option would be that Malcolm Butler signs his restricted free agent tender and the New England Patriots and the New Orleans could work out a trade.
Malcolm Butler is best known for his game-saving interception in Super Bowl XLIX that helped the New England Patriots win the Super Bowl against the Seattle Seahawks. Malcolm Butler has already visited the New Orleans Saints last week, via a report from the Boston Globe.
