The New York Yankees are in an unfamiliar spot compared to their illustrious history.
The 27-time World Series champions are at the bottom of the American League East standings with a 61-65 win-loss record. They are also 9.5 games behind from the third and final wild-card spot of the American League.
Longtime general manager Brian Cashman has labeled the 2023 MLB season as disastrous.
"It's been a disaster, this season. It's definitely a shock," the 56-year-old executive said.
Cashman added that nobody on the Yankees' side of the fence, from their player group, coaches, manager, or even outside the organization, would have predicted the difficult campaign.
The Yankees began the season with the second-highest payroll in the league with $275 million.
Cashman has certainly seen better days, being affiliated with the team since 1986 when he was still an intern in college. He was named the assistant manager in 1992 before taking over the reins in 1998.
The Yankees general manager has witnessed five World Series wins, one as an assistant GM and four as the team's top brass.

New York Yankees dodges 110-year-old record
The Yankees entered Wednesday with their worst losing streak in four decades, having lost nine in a row for the first time since 1982.
Another defeat would've been the first time the Yankees lost ten in a row since 1913.
Thankfully, the team picked it up and claimed a 9-1 victory over the Washington Nationals behind Aaron Judge's three home runs to snap the skid.
