Juan Soto Brings Yankees Hope this Season, But maybe for the Mets in the Next

The MLB season hasn't started yet, but it hasn't stopped teams from discussing future free agency news.

The New York Yankees made waves during the offseason, trading for Juan Soto a season before he would hit free agency.

However, their cross-town rival, the New York Mets, may be looking to bring in the 25-year-old phenom next year when he does hit free agency.

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Mets are expected to aggressively pursue Soto next offseason and attempt to bring him across town.

"The Mets are not only expected to strongly pursue but could be among the favorites for outfielder Juan Soto when he's a free agent next winter," Nightengale said.

The Mets rebounded from a poor season after making the Playoffs in 2022 as a wildcard. Now, they would look to mix things up next winter, going after one of one of the best outfielders in the league.

The Mets have tons of dominant hitters on their roster, such as Pete Alonso, Francisco Lindor, Jeff McNeil, Brandon Nimmo, and Francisco Alvarez. This area would likely remain a strength on the team coming into next season, but adding Soto to that roster can be a move to put them over the top; as the outfielder is currently one of the best players in baseball.

Mets owner Steve Cohen has already spent big money on the Mets roster and could be looking to spend more bringing in Soto next winter.

New York Yankees: High Expectations in the Bronx

The Yankees took a massive risk during the offseason by trading for Soto after a strong season with the San Diego Padres.

Despite only having one year left in his contract, the Yankees took a significant risk bringing in the all-star outfielder to help out their roster-hitting rotation.

The belief in the Bronx is that the Yankees' Soto would be a major contributor in helping them bounce back after a disappointing previous season.

Through a few games in spring training, Soto has already come up big for the pinstripes, batting number two in the lineup in their matchups against the Minnesota Twins and The Blues Jays; with a home run in the game against Jays.

Soto also showed up for the Yankees in their matchup against the Twins, where he drove in two more runs as the Yankees defeated the Minnesota Twins 9-2, on Monday afternoon.
