DaviAnd so, the great "Miami Vice" controversy has begun.
The Palm Beach Post reported Wednesday that new MLS franchise owner David Beckham is considering three monikers for the Miami team that is expected to begin competition in 2016 or 2017.
The most obvious choice, the Miami Vice - for the 1980s detectives show starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas - already has a detractor.
A Soccer.SI.com opinion piece denounced the Vice name as too gimmicky.
"Yes, the clothes, boats and music were cool," Soccer.SI.com writes. "But Miami Vice still is the lowest hanging fruit for those looking to quickly stereotype the country's eighth most populous metro area, which is anchored by a city of striking natural and architectural beauty boasting considerable history."
The other candidates are the Miami Current and an undisclosed name tied to a corporate sponsor, the Post reported.
The Post printed a logo that would depict the Vice name - the "M" on top of the "V" to form a shield that the soccer ball is streaking through.
Neither of the other logos was posted on the Post's website.
Beckham previously noted the importance of getting a name that the city's fans would support.
"We do have ideas for a team name," Beckham said in the video, as seen on MLSSoccer.com. "I'm sure people would have liked me to stood on the stage today and say, 'This is the name, (these) are the colors, but I want it to be right. I know how important a name is to a city and to the fans.
The Post added that the three names weren't the only ones being considered, but those three were part of the Beckham group's presentation to the City of Miami, Miami-Dade County and potential investors.
The marketing component would seem to suggest that the Miami Vice would have the greatest immediate impact on the franchise.
Soccer.SI.com cautioned that Beckham had time to consider his options and should come up with a name that is "authentically Miami."
