Emily Fox of North Carolina Tar Heels was picked by the Racing Louisville FC as the No. 1 overall pick of the NWSL (National World Soccer League) 2021 Draft on Wednesday evening.
Racing Louisville Picks Fox on Top
A senior defender of the Tar Heels, Emily Fox has been training in Orlando with the Women's National Soccer Team of the United States. According to Bleach Report, Fox has become a magnet for many accolades including being a semifinalist of the Hermann Trophy in 2019.
The Hermann is the collegiate soccer counterpart of the college football's Heisman Trophy, which saw DeVonta Smith as the latest awardee.
Besides being a semifinal contender of the Hermann Trophy, Fox was named in the 2019 All-ACC Tournament team, along with her recognitions as a three-time first-team All-ACC selection and the first-team All-American.
In 2019, the 22-year-old midfielder got sidelined during the 2019 NCAA College Cup after tearing his ACL. She ended up with 11 assists during the year. The Tar Heels strangled USC Trojans in a 3-2 thriller during the NCAA quarterfinals.
More than two years ago, Fox was only 20 years old when she already made waves in her national team debut. The 5-foot-5 Stone Bridge graduate had pocketed three caps during his national team campaign.
In Stone Bridge, Emily Fox only participated during his first year. His little help, however, was a big contribution for her team Bulldogs despite losing to Maury in the finals of the Class 5 Tournament. With the Bulldogs, she was awarded as a first-team all-state honoree after chalking up six assists and 16 goals, the highest score on the team.
The Stone Bridge looked for more Fox's actions in the field for another year, but Emily decided to push his plans for a much competitive national team pursuit.
Ahead of the draft, the most monitored prospect for the top pick was the 21-year-old Catarina Macario, but she declared an official pact with French Club Olympique Lyonnais Féminin for 2.5 years, the SB Nation reported.
The target date for the NWSL 2021 season-opener will be in mid-April with the commencement of the Challenge Cup. The regular season will start in mid-May for a 24-game schedule.
Meanwhile, the Washington Spirit picked Trinity Rodman as the No. 2 overall pick of the NWSL 2021. She was the daughter of NBA Hall of Famer Dennis Rodman, who is also known as "The Worm." Rodman was a monster rebounder during the Michael Jordan era.
In a report by Yahoo! Sports, Brianna Pinto of North Carolina was the No.3 overall pick of the draft. Sky Blue FC acquired Pinto then traded her for No. 4 overall pick Kiara Pickett of Stanford, who was drafted by Kansas City. The two clubs agreed to a $175,000 deal that will cover the trade allocation.
Racing Louisville adopted their own Louisville player Emina Ekic. The Chicago Red Stars swapped their No. 6 pick to Portland Thorns for the 2021 international spot and a 17th and 32 pick in exchange. The Thorns acquired Yazmeen Ryan through the trade.
Orlando Pride selected UCLA midfielder Vivian Villacorta for the ninth overall pick. Deanne Rose, a Canadian forward was picked tenth by the North Carolina Courage in the first round of the NWSL 2021 draft.
