The WWE has signed former NFL star Shawne Merriman to a contract and is reportedly looking to train the former San Diego Charger and Buffalo Bills linebacker to be an announcer before he becomes an active wrestler in the ring.

According to Wrestlingheadlines.com, the WWE plans to bring in Merriman in the same way that WCW brought in Steve "Mongo" McMichael from the NFL and train him to announce for them.
The WWE's current plan is to first train him as an announcer while he continues to train to be a wrestler and then eventually thrust him into the squared circle as an active competitor after he trains enough and is ready to wrestle.

There is reportedly a renewed interest on the part of the WWE to sign ex-football players who are young and but won't be returning to football.
Merriman, 29, was drafted by the Chargers 12th overall in the 2005 NFL Draft and played with them for over five seasons before being placed on waivers and claimed by the Bills, where he closed out his career after spending over two seasons in Buffalo.
Merriman appeared on the WrestleMania XXX pre-show this past Sunday at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans before signing a deal with the company and heading to their Performance Center in Florida.
Merriman played in 75 NFL games, amassing 43.5 sacks, an interception and 196 tackles. Now he'll trade his shoulder pads in for a microphone and then some wrestling trunks.
