Two clubs battling in the Copa Libertadores Round of 16—The Strongest and Defensor Sporting—have gone viral. No, it's not due to their majestic footballing talents, nor due to a maniacal outburst from fervent supporters.
This time, it was a "ghost."
With The Strongest carrying a 2-0 lead into the third minute of stoppage time, Fox Deportes cameras captured a shadowy figure gliding through the stands. At first glance, it appears to be nothing more than someone in the crowd shuffling their way through at a rapid pace.
That is, until it runs through a barrier at speed.
Per the Telegraph, some are dismissing it as a simple reflection of a player or spectator.That won't, however, stop parapsychologists across the world from delving into this new case.
Surprisingly, this isn't the first time soccer and the supernatural are believed to have crossed paths. Venezuelans to this day still believe deceased president Hugo Chavez was responsible for saving an otherwise certain goal in a World Cup cup qualifier against Ecuador in 2013. Venezuela would go on to win the match 1-0, but they ultimately failed to qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Not enough Hugo Chavez saves, apparently.
Lost in the shuffle of all this "supernatural activity" is the fact that an actual soccer match was played in Bolivia last Thursday. With the victory, The Strongest are in a prime position to advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament for the first time in their history. The club previously advanced to the Round of 16 in 1990 and 1994, but never to the quarterfinals.
As long as there are no deceased presidents between the posts in Uruguay, expect The Strongest to advance past Defensor Sporting and continue their Cinderella run.
